Much thanks to all for the quick replies; I did zap the PRAM and got it to 
work.
However, after awhile - the screen froze - and I could not find a keyhole to 
do the 'paperclip trick' to restart --- and nothing else would work -so I had 
no choice but to turn off the power strip.  
Well, I guess THAT was a mistake -- now  it is completely dead; no chimes, no 
lights, just a quick click/click when I press the power button.  Totally 
dead.  Cannot get CD tray to open; nothing.
I unplugged and replugged various wires/cords in case something got loose - 
don't know what else to try.
Advice again welcomed <sigh...>
