My basic rule of thumb with Classic apps is simple: When in doubt boot to OS 9 to install OS 9 apps. Classic is nice and all, but it sometimes can't handle complicated tasks like installs. My $.02.
On the other hand if the app is Carbon or Cocoa and Classic (which sounds like a drink) if you install booted to 9 it may not install the Cocoa version or all the Carbon parts. I was installing some older versions of Adobe software and didn't know they were Carbon/Cocoa. I just ran the install and bingo, native OS X apps. AFAIK CW 5 isn't even Carbon though.
