Okay I finally got it to boot via 9.1 CD. I erased the 9.2.2 partition and then reset directly to 10. yeah it's not dead in the water! on the other hand, I've tried to do the holding down command(apple key)-option-P-R but nothing happened. what was supposed to happen? I did manage to get the firmware to update in all this madness, but it didn't fix my weird memory reporting problem. There is this one dimm, thats made by a weird company it might be the problem, but the rest it from Viking, and Samsung. all Cas latency 3-2-2. So I'm not sure if they are really the source of my problems. I'll just have to play around and see.

P.S. - What's this about carriage returns?

Okay so I have a B&W G3 PowerMac that I've recently built up from parts I bought off ebay.

It chimes, but then hangs completely I don't get anything. I put in 10.3 install disk, press "C" nothing, 9.1 install disk "c" nothing. nothing nothing nothing! it chimes, it works-ish it just doesn't boot! what am I doing wrong? any help would be nice.

Carriage returns! They're called carriage returns...I suspect your computer's only out of breath from going so long without a break..;-)

I suspect your PRAM is confused beyond belief. Reboot holding down command-option-p-r and let it bong several times. Some people recommend letting the startup chime go 10 times or more.

I also suspect your PRAM battery is dead. Does it continually forget the date and time?

You shouldn't have to partition the drive over and over again. 10.3 should install from CD regardless of what OS is on the disk.

You may have a flaky disk, too. Double check all cabling, master/slave assignment of the drives.

You may have mis-seated or flaky RAM. That's notorious for causing hard-to-diagnose problems. That you have weirdness in the system profiler with the memory is an indicator of this.

The problem began, I fear with "...built out of parts I got on E-bay..." That makes it hard to diagnose with possible multiple points of failure.
