Yes they are, and people do it all the time.
Never underestimate the power of stupidity combined with stubbornness and brute strength.
The hardest connector to abuse in this fashion is the good old three-prong power plug, mostly because the connectors are mostly very dense and tough plastic. I've seen people who gave it the the good ol' college try, though and destroyed the male connector inside the monitor (in this case).
