These are rather special, VL series lithium batteries.
The VL series are rechargeable. The usual CR series are not.
The two batteries are each 3.0 volts, and are in series.
The machine needs a source of both 3.0 volts and 6.0 volts in order to work.
Often, only one of the two cells is bad.
Black is the common (ground) lead.
The other two are + 3.0 volts and +6.0 volts.
