I have been using the ImageWriter II as a printer for years and have always
wondered about the following:

The control window offers three modes: Best, Faster, and Draft. On the
printer itself there are two print quality selections, determined by one or
two LED's...two for Best and one for Faster.

In practice, I have found no difference in how the machine works, no matter
how the LED's are configured. In other words, it makes two passes with the
control screen radio buttons Best and one pass for Faster.

Can any of you Old Timers comment on these seemingly redundant controls?

Well Gee, thanks for making me feel so old.

In the Print Dialog, the Draft mode uses the built in CG (character generator) in the printer. Eons ago this was almost always how printing was done. In Faster and Best it RIPs (Raster Image Processing) the page in the computer and sends graphic information to the printer. Best is a staggered over strike to fill in the gaps.

When using the printers built in CG the printer can be configured to do different quality levels, similar to the above. This is what one of the buttons on the printer controls and the LEDs indicate. However this can be overridden in software which is almost certainly happening. Those settings have no effect on graphic printing at all (ie Best and Faster modes).

The ImageWriters date back to the Apple ][ era where programs were much less likely to control the printer and those front panel controls could have some effect.
