G4 Sawtooth DVD-RAM drive not booting from CDs or reading DVDs

I have a DVD-RAM drive (stock Apple) in a G4 Sawtooth that will mount 
CDs, but will not boot from CDs or mount DVDs. It is a new machine to 
me that the previous owner says booted fine, but it does not boot 
presently. I have not successfully booted with it. I know it DID mount 
and play movie DVDs, but currently does not.

I'm not dead in the water because an external FW Pioneer CD-RW/DVD-RW 
drive does boot and mount DVDs, but I'd like the internal stock Apple 
drive to be fully functional, too.

Has anyone else been there and done that?
All possible remedies appreciated. Thanks.
