As I recall, the update for my G4 cpu had to be run from OS9.

Yes, you were all correct. I finally got this thing up and running. The problems were compounded by a couple of things. The foremost was a bad stick of ram.
I had purchased two 256MB pieces from Coast to Coast Memory. When first installed they worked fine in OS 10.2.8 and 9.2.1 ( the operating systems on the computer when I got it). Then there was the failed G4 upgrade.
I put the G3 back in and ran the update. Everything got flaky from there. It took a little while for it to dawn on me that the problems might be memory related. I finally isolated it to one of the new memory modules. The computer won't even boot with it in there now.
The other little problem was with the G4 processor. (or maybe more with me). OWC now advertises these to be guaranteed to run at 500 MHz. This, however, was a used processor and I'm not sure how old it is. Always feeling the need for speed, I clocked it to 500 MHz and stuck it in. The computer would only boot into open firmware. Cool, but useless, and eventually annoying.
I tried every speed over and under 450MHz with the same result. Eventually I set it to 450 MHz and it booted up and now runs perfectly. This processor will only run at it's rated speed in the B & W.
All in all, though, I'm very happy with it. With the video card and drives from my Beige M/T it should make a very nice little audio and video editing machine. And all for under $300.00.
Thanks to everyone who helped.
