Hi Folks

This is a bit of a dud question but...

I have a B & W G3 upgraded to 500mhz. What is the most up to date OS X
version I can run

Get Panther, it's faster than Jaguar at almost anything and has less 'annoyances'.

and should I add anything else to make it run smoothly. My
specs are

Sonnet G3 500

I recently pushed my B*W up to a G4/500 with 1MB L2 cache. It's made a world of difference in OS X 10.3. Mid-speed G4 upgrades aren't that expensive now for the B&W and OS X is really getting to the stage where you need a G4 for anything more than basic functionality (i.e. Web, e-Mail, Word Proc. etc...). I use mine for Photoshop and Illustrator work, as well as Web Design so it has to move at a half healthy speed. For look and feel at 1600x1200 resolution (I have a nice monitor!) it is only slightly behind my G4/800 15" iMac. The iMac has more raw CPU power though.

256MB Ram

Need more really. I have 1GB in mine but you'll do fine on 512MB unless you want to start hurling huge pictures about.

40GB HD with 8mb cache

That'll do fine.

B&W motherboard/case

Identify if it has a Rev. 1 or Rev. 2 board here: http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/G3-ZONE/yosemite/newfeatures.html

Voodoo 5500 PCI

That video card will not work with OS X without some messing about (and possibly a second video card?) and even when it does work it won't perform at all well. If you are going to change anything as a matter of priority then swap this for a Radeon (7000) PCI Mac Edn. - that will allow you to run Quartz Extreme on the graphics card which will liven OS X up a great deal.

10.3.4 runs smooth on this system. I'm planning on upgrading my video card, but I'm waiting to see if ATI comes out with anything new. for your system I would suggest more memory. When the next video-card comes out from ATI I would recommend getting it. and then install 10.3.4 and you'll be set!

Is there some sort of rumour going around about a new video card for PCI machines form ATi or are you just sitting on it for a while? There hasn't been an new Mac Edn. PCI card for over 2 years (that being the Radeon 7000 PCI) so I suspect we are out of luck. There are Radeon 9000 cards for PCI PCs floating around though. Even if ATi do release a new PCI Mac GFX card it will be very expensive, the advantages of faster GPU and more VRAM, which helps Quartz Extreme rendering, will come at a high price.
