Hello everybody,
I'm not certain whether this is really on topic for the list, but it's worth a shot. My B&W G3 runs headless and lives 60 miles away, so the only way I can use it is to ssh in. I could do this fine before, but now I've got my own DSL line installed and all I get is:
PowerBook:~ stocksy$ ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED] reverse mapping checking getaddrinfo for stocksy.is failed - POSSIBLE BREAKIN ATTEMPT!
The Power Mac is on an NTL 600/128k cable connection. I thought that it was something wrong with my NTL's DNS or the DNS settings on my Power Mac, but I can ssh to the machine through my neighbour's access point (naughty me) just fine. Trying a reverse lookup on my DSL line's IP gives:
Power-Mac:~ stocksy$ host 83.146.29.99 Host 99.29.146.83.in-addr.arpa not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)
That's it. Your ISP is having DNS problems, specifically reverse DNS resolution.
Do 'host host-83-146-29-99.bulldogdsl.com', I'll bet you get the right ip address.
Yet ping can resolve the hostname to an IP:
Power-Mac:~ stocksy$ ping host-83-146-29-99.bulldogdsl.com PING host-83-146-29-99.bulldogdsl.com (83.146.29.99): 56 data bytes 64 bytes from 83.146.29.99: icmp_seq=0 ttl=244 time=46.624 ms
That's because forward resolution is working.
forward resolution is looking up a host name and getting an IP address, reverse (which is what your remote system is warning on) takes an ip address and looks up the host name. SSH requires that reverse and forward name resolution resolve to the same address. Your reverse isn't resolving properly, so you're getting that warning, since it could be a spoofed breaking attempt.
