forward resolution is looking up a host name and getting an IP address, reverse (which is what your remote system is warning on) takes an ip address and looks up the host name. SSH requires that reverse and forward name resolution resolve to the same address. Your reverse isn't resolving properly, so you're getting that warning, since it could be a spoofed breaking attempt.
somewhere in your config for your sshd, you should be able to control whether this kills the connection attempt or not. (It's unclear to me from your post if you are asking about the message, or the lack of a completed connection).
At least, you can in NetBSD, which is sorta related to the OS X base.
