Dana,
I can answer your second question. Yes Panther and OS 9 can interface. I have two G3s running OS 9 working with my OS X iBook. I even have an old LC running 7.5.5 that hangs with my iBook. Now ... all this is done using AppleTalk and it is not the most reliable set-up in the world. Sometimes machines aren't visible and authentication fails. Other times it rocks. I even have the LC set up as a bridge to my old LaserWriter 4/600. Mostly though I use file sharing to avoid burning CDs to transfer files to the old machines.

As Wayne's reply puts forth ... AppleTalk is very antiquated and would best be avoided on a newer setup such as the one you seem to be describing. As to why the G4 is "anti-social" ... it might be that there are no shares defined on the G4 even though file sharing is on. It is also possible that there is some sort of misconfigured access lists. You might try enabling another service on the G4 like the web server or FTP server to make sure that there aren't any lower-level network problems.

That's about all I can think of now ...

Hi Wayne,
Actually, it's my friend using AppleTalk, *or* file sharing (if that is now
distinguished in Panther) - he's trying to interface the G4 with 2 Emacs
just purchased, and an HP LaserJet (1600 I believe). The Emacs perform
flawlessly via AppleTalk (though your suggestion bears sharing; he would
have to check to see if an Ethernet card is available for the model printer
he has) - the G4 refuses to go out and look around (so to speak). I find it
very strange that it (the G4) can do all the network things one is supposed
to do with the Ethernet port *except* outgoing file sharing (again other
units can reach out and connect TO the G4; the G4 can't reciprocate) - it
does not make sense.

Question no one has answered yet: can Panther interface with OS 9 machines?

Thanks,
Dana

Hi Dana,
I am NOT an AppleTalk guru, and I don't want to be. I detest AppleTalk.
That is why I put an HP JetDirect ethernet card on my HPLJ4M.
Having said that, I wonder why you are messing with AppleTalk at all.
You don't need it for TCP/IP.
I have a cable modem and an Asante FR3004C router, and have 3 macs on
it--two beiges running 10.2.8 and one AGP Graphics G4 running 10.3.4.
No problems at all.

Greetings all,
This one is for the AppleTalk gurus in Panther, a system I am not yet
familiar with.
My friend was having difficulties getting a G4 (AGP model) w/ Panther
to
recognize a network server via AppleTalk (via the native Ethernet
port).
Wanting to see if the problem may be the port itself, I invited him
over to
hook it up to my known-to-work home network, served by a cable modem
and
cable router.

Wayne
