FTP works great for our outside clients.
I have it running on my server as a backup incase AFP and SMB stop working. Highly unlikely but you never know. I also use it from outside.
I'm finding SMB works just fine for OS X and Windows based servers.
Has some weird filename restrictions - I have had files with strange filenames get garbled on SMB and not be deleteable from Windows.
I'm going to set up an Xserve later this year with Panther Server. I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of performance I'll get out of it.
They are like the network technicians ultimate play toy. The remote Server Monitor is soooo cooolll... :oD
I played with one (heavily supervised by an Apple demonstrator) at the 2003 Paris Expo. Wonderous. I can only assume Panther Server is even better than Jag-wire.
