I have been thinking about this for awhile and I think the time has come to
finally decide how best to handle this situation.
Many WiFi manufacturers make units which can be used as "bridges", connecting one wired portion of a network with another. Put one upstairs and one down and let them talk to each other.
Typically you can't bridge and be an access point at the same time, so you'll probably need two additional units. But you can get them for $60 or $70 each (see pricewatch.com, for instance... less on Ebay). Run them on a different channel than your existing one - preferably 5 or more away (ie, if you're currently running on ch 6, you'd want the other pair to be ch 1 or ch 11.)
