Thanks Bruce, I tried the following piece of advice about an hour ago, which
worked - 
<you'll need to kill the Netinfo DB.
boot into single user mode and type:
fsck -y
mount -uw /
mv /var/db/netinfo/local.nidb /var/db/netinfo/local.nidb.bad
rm/var/db/.AppleSetupDone
Reboot>
I was just going to archive and install Panther again but that just seemed
like giving in.
