Harold writes,

<I think if you launch Toast prior to inserting a CD-R, there'll be no
preparation. That only happens when you insert the CD before opening
Toast.

Try that: open Toast, drag whatever you want to copy to its window,
click on Write CD or whatever, wait fot Toast to ask for a blank CD
and then, only then, insert it.>

Well, I'm making SOME progress. ;-) I still haven't burned a CD but I
ALMOST did. I tried this suggestion, and after some still rather lengthy
"waiting for the writer" and "Preparing..." messages -- but not QUITE as
bad as the last few times, it actually went through the writing process
for once. However, when it supposedly finished writing the CD, I got the
following error message, which I wrote down in case you or anyone else
here has seen it before and knows what it means. Exact quote, caps
included:

The drive reported an error:
Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR
Sense Code = 0x02
NO SEEK COMPLETE

I then clicked my mouse on "OK" -- what else could I do other than
cancel? -- and then the next thing I know Toast says, "Finishing..." And
then there is an interminably lengthy period of time during which I have
no idea what it's doing, and I can't do anything else on the computer
either, as I discover when I try to insert a floppy to copy something I'm
working on to move it to my Powerbook, figuring I'll write while I wait
for this "Finishing..." process to end. But not only that, just the fact
that I tried to do something else practically locked up the whole system.
The cursor moved still so I know it wasn't a total freeze, but I couldn't
switch to another application or make the Toast window big again. I
couldn't even force quit out of Toast, and I ended up having to give my
G3 a "nerve pinch" to restart it. The CDRW is now off and hopefully you
or another lister can tell me what happened/how I can fix it.

Thanks for your suggestion, Harold, and thanks to you and anyone else in
advance if you can help me.
