It seems that a number of Photoshop operations use Altivec, which is available
on a G4 but not a G3. That might account for the difference I saw.


If you are thinking of using Photoshop or some of Apple's video applications, G4
might make a big difference.

Photoshop 6.0 uses a good number of Altivec operations if you add the Altivec module, Photoshop 7.0 is completely Altivec optimised AFAIK. Adobe are always in the cutting edge of CPU optimisation as it keeps their software up there as the best. Photoshop CS for Mac is fully tuned to take advantage of G4 and G5 CPUs at 32-bit level (I don't know if it has any native 64-bit code) and Photoshop CS for Windows is optimised to use Intel Hyper-Threading technology.
