Is it mounted? Can you select it and click the mount icon in the menu bar?

I have an external firewire hard drive which was working perfectly but now will not open. It shows up in disk utility but the type is a lighter gray than the others. Disk utitily says the disk is fine. Anyone have any idea what happened?
