Yep, I have another drive that shows up okay and works fine. I even put the drive on another mac, same thing happens. I'm guessing there's some meaning as to why the drive shows up on disk utility, but lighter. So far I can't figure it out.

Have you tested the port by connecting another firewire device?
Have you zapped the pram?
If you read the Apple Discussion forum under USB - FireWire - Peripheral You�ll see many threads with similar problems but no answers.
