I have also experienced Kernel Panics using the USB bus for Audio on a B&W, but these 
ceased with the introduction of OS X 10.2.6. Only used the on-board F/W once (in 
10.2.8 when transfering stuff so I could blank and re-install for 10.3) and it worked 
OK. Wasn't excitingly fast, but it worked. I agree with the slow ideam, my iMac G4 
FW400 is faster by a margin.
