The on-board ports were locking up on very large transfers.  Put a plain 
firewire TI (not NEC) card in the PCI slot and the problem disappeared.  
Consistent problems with non-TI cards with large transfers -- I don't know what the 
chip on the on-board is, but it behaved like an NEC.
