ibm was one of the companies, it was a coordinated effort amongst several companies, including apple and motorola, and i think a few other companies. both motorola and ibm are producing chips (or were the last time i heard). it really helps when several companies help/coordinate something like this since they have different resources/strengths and it helps computer manufacturers when they coordinate with chip makers and vice versa.
