This card WOULD have been an upgrade to an 802.11b card, if it was an 802.11G card. 
WiFi 'g' cards 
are backwards compatible with the 'b' variant but 'a' cards only work with other 'a' 
cards and access 
points. This is pretty much the reason why 'a' cards are rarely found and 'g' is the 
norm. Since 'b' was 
the original standard, if you want more speed you buy a 'g' and you can still use all 
those 'b' access 
points without having to do anything.
