Just got my long-awaited G5 :-)
and I recall a past post that recommended a clean install on any new machine--still a good idea? and why?
What is the current thinking on partitioning a 160 GD drive? I use a external firewire drive for backup.
When my G5 arrived, I set it up with 3 partitions: Mac OS with 60 GB, Mac OS Repair with 8 GB, and Storage with the remainder. Mac OS is my main boot partition with all programs, all users, and user data. The OS Repair partition has a complete install of the OS along with an install of just my disk repair programs. This is basically a partition to boot to allow doing a verify and repair of the main Mac OS partition and also a just-in-case Mac OS becomes unbootable for something other than a hard disk crash. (This is a hold over from my OS 8/9 days where I did need it a couple of times.) Storage is where my iTunes music library is stored and where I store anything else that is large and I don't want to back up because I can either generate it again or if it goes away it will not materially affect me. I deal with a lot of audio and do archive it once I'm done with it (always the end of the day), but don't need to back up the work in progress.
