Follow-up. Upgrade complete - the hard (long) way - and all seems well. Had some problems with printers and Logitech wireless keyboard/mouse, but they are/should be resolved with a simple reinstall.
For anyone else needing to move their Users from Jag (10.2.8) to Panther (10.3.5), Apple provides the process (!).
