I am writing this from work and my home ADSL connection is seemingly down, but it all started in a strange way.
First I couldn't connect using my D-link DI 704-P router, only if I connected directly to the ADSL modem, but now I cannot connect using either.
Just strange that it should go in steps.
The modem shows the two LEDs it should, so I doubt it's my ISP (though I am currently holding in a queue to check), and when I get home I will check using my work PowerBook and a different cable.
Anyone have any similar experience or suggestion ???
This is very strange, probably just a bizarre coincidence? I've just spent the past hour trying to troubleshoot my Cox cable modem connection with a D-Link 704 router w/2.57 build3 firmware. I was having very similar issues to which you describe. It appeared that my router had somehow crashed my cable modem. I'm pretty experienced, and messed with it about 20 minutes but the modem seemed dead. I called Cox, and in the midst of talking with a Tech who said numerous times "that's strange, it shows connected, but it usually pings very quickly" it suddenly had the "cable" light come on solid. I thanked the Tech who said she did "nothing" from her end, and it still wasn't working. I rebooted connected directly without the router and it still didn't connect, even though all the lights were "normal" and the Tech said she was getting "100% function, zero packet loss." I reset the modem for the tenth time, and finally the computer worked when connected directly. I said to the Tech, "Thank you, it's working fine now" and hung up. I reconnected the router and the router lights were wrong. This router has been rock solid for years, and now it wouldn't connect. I looked that the cable, and it appeared slightly chewed on by a pet, but the pet that would have chewed it was one I was keeping for friends on vacation, and it left a month ago. The connection had been fine, plus I couldn't see any broken wires, but I replaced the cable anyway, and the new cable didn't work either. I went into the router setup software and checked the info, and it said the modem "wasn't ready". I reset the modem again, reset the router, and it seemed crazy. I honestly can't say what I did that fixed the situation, it seemed like I disconnected everything from the router, reset & powered up, and then connected to the modem (with all status lights "go"). I then added back the computers and wireless router individually, checking each. It seemed like my system had "demons" inside it because it wasn't acting normally at all. Perhaps we are under internet "attack"? I tried several different ATM machines all over my city this evening, and none were working? Bizarre.
