I dont want to bore you all with the complete story, but my experience may
help someone else so I will record my solution for posterity.

Problem. Infrequent, fairly random freezes of a Beige G3MT (9.2.2).

At various stages the suspects seemed to be;-
Outlook Express, Internet Explorer, IPNetrouter, TCP/IP, disturbance on my
dial-up line, .... freezes getting more frequent .... then eventually a
freeze without being on-line al all .... hmmmm .... maybe RAM problems

Annoyed, I dismantled the machine to start swapping RAM sticks and moved it
to another room so that I could work on it. In doing so I noticed that the
external SCSI CD burner cable was not seated perfectly at the burner end.
It was in, but not all the way in.

Reseated the cable and has been fine ever since!
