I dont want to bore you all with the complete story, but my experience may help someone else so I will record my solution for posterity.
Problem. Infrequent, fairly random freezes of a Beige G3MT (9.2.2). At various stages the suspects seemed to be;- Outlook Express, Internet Explorer, IPNetrouter, TCP/IP, disturbance on my dial-up line, .... freezes getting more frequent .... then eventually a freeze without being on-line al all .... hmmmm .... maybe RAM problems Annoyed, I dismantled the machine to start swapping RAM sticks and moved it to another room so that I could work on it. In doing so I noticed that the external SCSI CD burner cable was not seated perfectly at the burner end. It was in, but not all the way in.
