The problem and its solution may seem slightly off-topic or unnecessary or
old hat to some but rest assured that 80% of Australians (and probably most
of the rest of the world) are still on dial-up connections so the solution
may be of interest to someone out there like me using a G3 with serial
external modem.

Problem:  External serial modem.  Inconsistent modem connections, dropouts,
no error correction / reliable link entries in PPP log ....

Solution:  The modem script from the modem manufacturers web site had no
resource fork and therefore no mlts resource so Remote Access was unable to
determine the full capabilities of the modem.  Manufacturer had in fact
edited the script on a PC when they upgraded the script to cater for v90.

Copied a mlts resource from another script, editted it to match my modem and
hasnt dropped a connection since!
