on all the list i'm on, mac, lem, and other, there are always a large number of threads that don't interest me, or that have been beat into the ground but continue to illicit comment, i just delete said messages and let it go. i expect that any mailing list i'm on will have many post that i am not interested in, but that others are.
i think it's fairly ridiculous to think that any particular list will only have topics that a given individual will find interesting or relevant. i think people need to be willing to throw out what they consider trash, and realize that not all of their interest will be shared by everyone on a given list just as they will not be interested in all of the interest of others. even the mac os has features that many find delightful while others have no interest in them. this does not indicate a flaw in the list or the mac os, but rather that the audience is broad and hence the interest of people on the list are very broad. alienating nix users is hardly in the interest of non-nix users since many nix user's know a lot about the mac os, and macs in general, particularly since os x is a flavor of nix in the first place and much of the same knowledge applies to both. the lem list have a very good signal to noise ratio compared to most of the list i'm on. expect not to be interested in all threads, few if any subscribers are interested in all of them. i constantly see long, very long, and ridiculously long threads that are of no interest to me, i simply delete them, and if necessary sort by thread or subject and delete them in bulk. as i said, i do this on every list i'm on, even fairly focused and more technically aimed list. i've also learned interesting and useful things on occasion from threads that i didn't think were relevant to my needs at the time. expecting everything on the list to be interesting or relevant to a given person is a sure way to trim down the list to the point that it is interesting to very few and of pushing most of us, particularly the more knowledgeable, to other list which haven't been overly sieved. ymmv.
