I've been thinking on this, since this is a list for the G series of PowerMacs and they run OS X which includes UNIX built-in, can we discuss the built-in UNIX stuff that comes with OS X? This standard would put the Pine Problem thread to rest, since pine's not built-in to OS X.
Hardly. We commonly discuss applications which don't come with the OS.
So true...
People, you don't have a Mac anymore. You have a BSD OS with a Mac skin.
If it bothers folks to know how their computer works now, well then it bothers them ;) and that's a reality too.
There are very few commercial people making software for OS X. I'd guess under 100. Crossovers from the unix world is where almost anything useful is coming from for most shareware/freeware (of the software I use anyway- capturing streaming audio, working with sound files, image manipulation, database work). You can learn about it if you like, or certainly don't learn about it if you don't like. But learning to use SourceForge adds a HUGE set of neat softwares to your Mac. And a lot of stuff comes as binaries already, so to the user it's no different than downloading a 3rd party software that's "allowed" to be talked about, like Eudora.
I appreciate the stated policy of talk about it but keep it short, but I'm not sure that's best solution long-term for the group. It's certainly the list owner's choice to make policy.
There's a whole world out there, people! <grin>
