I have an external firewire drive, 250gb, and while poking around the other day I saw on the info panel an option to index the drive, so I clicked on it.
oops. :(
It has been indexing, day and night, for 3 days now, and it's only a third of the way through! Is this normal, and does anyone know of a way to speed it up?
It's a low-priority background task. Only way to speed it up (albeit slightly) is to let the machine idle, not sleep, with the Finder front.
If OS 9, open Sherlock.
Also, do you think it's really needed?
No. But then again, it depends on what's on your drive and how its organized.
Personally, when I need file content searches, I use File Buddy (shareware) and target it to specific folder (trees).
