...well, it's maybe not as easy as getting the right software. I did some vinyl-to-CD conversions earlier, on my 8500. Even after manual tweaking and editing, the sound was not good enough for most music. Sounded tinny and constricted, much worse than the LPs. Simply because the analog-to-digital HARDWARE in that Mac wasn't very good. It's hopefully better in newer Macs, but for really good results I suspect we would have to get better digitizing hardware, on a PCI.

That is an interesting observation. I have been digitizing vinyl since the Quadra 840, and have always felt that the Mac's digitizing ability is very good. For my personal use I generally do nothing to the incoming signal. The scratch, hiss and pop are just part of the vinyl experience. Many people however do request that I clean all the noise out.

Sound like color changes in popularity over time as well. People familiar with Jimi Hendrix on vinyl often feel the "Experience" is missing on the remade CDs. Sound equipment of the 60s is no match in quality or specifications for even the cheapest boom box of today. Frequency response outside of mid range was either lacking or distorted and latency in the mechanical portions of the turntable made crisp and clean an unobtainable goal.

I think sound during the 60s was experienced much like impressionist paintings. For some "Starry Night" captures the night while others feel it can be best experienced in a planetarium. But most will agree that a cold cloudless moonless Southern Minnesota night is the ultimate experience:).

Coaster works very well on 68k Macs. Sound Studio is very capable on PPC hardware and with OS X. It provides the most tools for not only filtering by for changing the whole envelope. Spin Doctor works with the same hardware and systems as Sound Studio. It does a nice fast down an dirty job, but can be a bit heavy handed.
