Well I'm running 10.3 on a G4-500 and it certainly doesn't compare to 9.22 in finder speed. I don't think you'll find too many people that think it does. OS X is great. I hate booting into classic, but even my mirror door 1.25 gig OS X machine at work is not as snappy as my G4-500 in 9.22's blazing fast finder. My wife has an Imac 333 using X and I can't imagine any serious X user saying that it's just as fast as 9.x.

??? Wha? that make NO sense whatsoever. I've installed 10.3 on a 300 mHz iMac, and ir runs just fine, easily as fast as OS 9 ever did on that machine. 10.2 wasn't much slower. I'll agree 10.1 was no way ready for prime time, but no way does it take "a supercomputer just to display a directory full of files".

This isn't the first time you've stated Aqua is impossibly slow...I'd like to know what you're running it on to say that. I've not found it to be slow, certainly not compared to Linux boxes (and I've used some seriously hotrodded linux boxes doing molecular modelling) and trust me there is NO window manager in Linux that's even remotely as well integrated and behaved as Aqua is.
