I have been using OS X 10.2.8 and 9.2.2 on my computer for almost two years but it came installed.
Now I am upgrading my wife's iMac from 9.1 to 10.2.8 and 9.2.2. on the same 20 GB volume space. I checked around and found several bits of advice that said it does not matter what order the OSs are installed. The OS X install is completed including installing lot's of software updates.
I was about to install 9.2.2 and was surprised after booting from the CD that it automatically rebuilt the desktop first. What desktop? The drive had been erased and the OS X was a clean install.
Now as I continue the installer tells me "9.2.2 may not be installed over the current system software on the selected volume (10.2.8)," which is good since I obviously don't want to do that. It then says to "Press the Options button to perform a clean install." Then the next step is to say "OK" to performing a clean install.
This makes me believe everything already on the volume (OS X) will be erased in order for the clean install to be performed.
Am I worried about nothing and this is the normal procedure for installing 9.2.2 alongside OS X on the volume? I don't want to risk losing a couple hours of work.
Or do I have well-founded concerns and have not followed the proper procedure for installing both
operating systems together.
Thanks,
Mike
Mike,
Depending on which rev iMac you are using; you will have to install 10.x on an 8 gig partition before anything else.. After which you can install 9.2.2 from inside 10.x. While I've just upgraded to 10.x on my G3, I ran into the same issue. Once 10.x was installed, I put in my 9.2.1 cd, booted classic from inside 10.x and did the install without any issues..
