This prompts me to ask about something I've always meant to ask about:

From the Beige G3 writeup on the LEM site:

The beige G3 was the first Mac to power up from the keyboard where turning off
the computer doesn't turn off power to a monitor or other device connected to
the power out plug on the back. Apple reported this as a cost saving measure.

Did Apple *really* have to do this? How much money were they actually saving by such a move? I'm having a hard time dealing with the fact that Apple is apparently still thinking in terms of "cost saving measures" with their (hugely expensive) G5 boxes. For the price they're asking, just _put the power button on the bloody keyboard_ and have it control all other devices for ease-of-use.

By the time of the Beiges probably all new monitors were energy saving so switching power to the monitor was redundant.

Apple never intended the monitor port for anything but a monitor. I believe they say this in their docs.
