I have an old beige G3 266 desktop computer that I love to play around with. It's not my main Mac so it's seen all kinds of configurations. I've successfully loaded 10.2 on it all the way up to 10.2.8 AND I've been able to put 10.3 on it using xpostfacto. X runs well on it although the floppy becomes unusable. So, you really need to consider changing the old CD-ROM to a CD-RW and you might want to increase the RAM to something above 256.
I just recently upgraded the processor to a G4 500 and it is MUCH faster. But, after all of the OS's that I've run on it, including Yellow Dog Linux, I find that OS 9.2 suits it best. For me, it's also an advantage in that I have a computer that boots OS 9 natively as my latest iMacs won't. I despise running classic on 10.3, not that I've really needed to in the almost 4 years that I've been using Mac since my switch from the dark side.

Well. I feel a little silly. I posted earlier this
week wondering what was wrong with my hard drive. Disk
utilities couldn't see the drive.
Turns out I needed to, uh, put a driver on the hard
drive! Works ok now...

Now I have another question...

I would like to know if I should make the jump to X?
Currently I have 8.6 installed, 192 mb ram, 6gb
hd,G3/266MT. In anyone's experience, is this too
primitive of a system to notice any real benefit from
X, or am I better off sticking with 8.6? I have heard
X's stability touted as being superior to all other
OS's.
Exterminate all rational thought.
