A schoolteacher gave me an early G-3 iMac (the one called a molar because it looks like a big tooth) that has been in use in her elementary school classroom for a couple of years, and she asked if I could "make it work right again" so they could continue using it. Seems it has been locking up and "behaving weirdly." Although it had originally come with 10.1 on it, it appears that they were only using it in 9. Someone had thrown away almost everything related to 10, maybe to gain disk space, and although the computer would still boot into 10, the dock was filled with nothing but question marks.

I have an eMac OS-X install CD and I used it to put a fresh copy of 10.2 on the drive. Then I tried to upgrade it to Panther using some upgrade CDs I have, but the computer keeps asking for a password before it will proceed with the upgrade. Neither the teacher nor anyone in the class can remember what the password is. So I'm stuck.

I'm new to OS-X myself, so I'm stymied. What should I do now?

Tom
