I was thinking of upgrading it to os x.
would 256mb ram do.
waht other software do i need to get.

256 is a minimum, it'll run OS X ok, but you would really like more. Fortunately your G4 will take pretty much any PC100 or PC133 RAM.

as for other software, if you get a OS X 10.3 kit, you can largely get along with Open Source.

My favorite browser is Firefox, from <http://www.mozilla.org>, though safari is OK, too.

For an office suite, install the X-windows that comes with 10.3, and install open office <http://www.openoffice.org> or get the native java port at <http://www.neooffice.org/>

AbiWord works natively.

There are OS X ports of the Gimp for photo manipulation. or the shareware Graphic Converter.

If you are into programming, go to Apple.com, get a free online developers net membershiop, and you can download all of the development tools.

I'm reminded, as I listen to Ray and Willie sing "It Was a Very Good Year", that iTunes is an indispensable bit of software, download it from Apple.

If you do science/engineering, check out: <http://naranja.umh.es/~atg/> A TON of cool stuff.

What do you want to do is a better question...
