Ok, this is what I have done:

Printer Setup Utility
Add printer
with these settings  IP-Print - LPD/LPR - 192.168.0.1 - HP 5MP'

The IP address is correct and is recognised in the Utility,
but when I go to print it won't.

I have even tried setting up the printer again on the other Mac,
but I cannot get that to work either, only the old installation.

What/how should I do it ????

Check the documentation for the router; I'll bet it uses a specific (and non-standard) queue name.

OSX provides a default of 'lp' or 'lpr' I think.

Look in the Mac that works at the file /etc/cups/printers.conf

Find the section associated with the working printer setup :

like:

<Printer print_on_pharmacy-xeroxcolor>
Info Xerox color
DeviceURI lpd://pharmacy-xeroxcolor/print
State Idle
Accepting Yes
JobSheets none none
QuotaPeriod 0
PageLimit 0
KLimit 0
</Printer>

The queue name (print) here is at the end of the printer uri: lpd://pharmacy-xeroxcolor/print

Put whatever is there in the queue name field in the Printer Setup screen.

The HP printers in my setup just have the printer name:

<DefaultPrinter pharmacy-317>
Info pharmacy-317
DeviceURI lpd://pharmacy-317
State Idle
Accepting Yes
JobSheets none none
QuotaPeriod 0
PageLimit 0
KLimit 0
</Printer>

(because the JetDirects will take anything that comes to the lpd port and treat it as a print stream.)
