CD-RW Drive-Problem

I just purchased an unused LaCie SCSI, USB and U&I CD-RW Drive on the 
internet. I connected it to my G3 MT which is using OS 10.2.8. The 
computer recognized it with Toast 5.1.3L which came with the equipment. 
I attempted to copy Microsoft  Office X onto a disk. The procedure 
started but about a third of the way I got this note:

The drive reported an error:
Sense Key = HARDWARE ERROR
Sense Code = 0x 09, Ox01
Tracking Servo Failure
What is my problem?
