I'm trying to format some IBM DGHS04Z 4.3 Gb 50-pin drives in a Beige G3. These are pulls that are claimed to be tested good, though I don't know what they were in before they came to me. I've tried under OS 9.2 and OS 10.2, and both on the built-in SCSI bus and on a PCI adapter. Results are largely the same.
Under OS 9.2, Drive Setup sees that a device is there, but can't deal with it at all because, it says, the drive doesn't have 512-byte blocks.
From within Drive Setup... Select the drive then select "Initialization Options" from the Functions menu. Check both "Low Level Format" and "Zero all data". Then try fully initializing the drive.
"Low Level Format" should correct the block size issue.
"Zero all data" will exercise every block to ensure these pulls are usable.
