From within Drive Setup... Select the drive then select "Initialization Options" from the Functions menu. Check both "Low Level Format" and "Zero all data". Then try fully initializing the drive.
Thanks very much for the pointer. It's been so long since I've had to low-level format a drive I'd forgotten that such things were necessary. IDE makes me lazy. :)
Drive Setup still refused to initialize the drive, even though it offered the low-level format option. But I grabbed a copy of a freeware formatter off the web, and bingo, the drive was formatted and initialized just fine.
