LaserWriter 8.6.5 was installed by Mac OS 8.6 LaserWriter 8.7 was installed by Mac OS 9.1
The latter works fine with my LW 16/600PS.

8.7 is already installed, apparently part of the 9.1 package. Which means that I do not need to install anything...right? Wouldn't 8.7 supercede 8.5.1 with all functionality in place? Or is there some reason this thing needs 8.5.1 specifically?
