Since I don't want to upgrade (yet) to a G4, is there any way around
this
problem? Is there a version of Final Cut that runs on a G3 or is there
some
way I can get another version to run, probably slowly, just to see if
it's
worth upgrading? I Movie captured my video perfectly and transferred the
edited video back to my DV cam perfectly so it seems the speed is there,
lots of RAM too. It's a G3/300.

Thanks!

I don't know if current versions of Final Cut or Final Cut Express will work on
a G3, but the earlier versions go way back, like ten years, and would be very
happy on a G3. I'm pretty sure that versions of Final Cut that run in os 9
don't require G3. They are quite capable professional programs.

On the other hand, if Final Cut is optimized for G4 and actually uses Altivec,
(pretty sure newer versions are) the rendering speeds will be much faster on a
G4. Rendering is where time is saved by a fast machine, if you already have a
machine that can handle display, input and output. And G4 upgrades are quite
reasonable now. Get one at least 500 mhz to take advantage of the instant
rendering feature (I forget the correct name,) which is very nice. You can spend
under $200 for a G4 zif that fast.

Another thought is that the newest versions of Final Cut Express will only run
on AGP machines. But you can edit the plist to overcome that limitation and it
runs fine on a pci machine. Maybe the G4 requirement, if it exists, can be
hacked as easily.
