99% of the time, you won't see any difference between the two.  Most 
ISPs haven't even bothered turning on v.92 support.  v.44, the new 
compression spec that may make downloading faster, only works on 
material that isn't already compressed.  The norm nowadays is to 
gzip html on the fly before sending, so no help there, and other 
than that, you don't often sling raw text, so no real gains from 
modem compression.

I'm still trying to pick out an external modem for my G-Box.  I've 
had a
really generous offer of a V.90 modem, but the anal-retentive in 
me will
just not rest knowing that all the newer modems are on the V.92 
standard.

Has anyone used V.90 and V.92 modems side-by-side and noticed an 
appreciable
speed increase with their newer modem?  I know that 53k or so is 
the most
you can hope to squeeze out of POTS lines, but the V.92 standard 
is supposed
to make downloading faster.  Or at least *appear* to be. >:/
