Has anyone used V.90 and V.92 modems side-by-side and noticed an appreciable speed increase with their newer modem? I know that 53k or so is the most you can hope to squeeze out of POTS lines, but the V.92 standard is supposed to make downloading faster. Or at least *appear* to be. >:/
IMO, V.92 is nice to have. But your ISP must support it (many don't), AND to see the speed diff, you need to have a _very_ clean phone line (used to getting 50 Kbps carriers or better with V.90).
V.92 offers four major features over V.90:
"Modem On Hold" lets you take an incoming call when you're online, then return to the Internet connection. This is easily done in V.90 by tweaking the carrier drop timers.
"Quick Connect" slightly reduces the time it takes for the modem to establish a usable connection.
Upstream speeds of up to 48 Kbps (V.90 maxes out at 33.6), line quality permitting.
And then there's a better data compression algorithm, which mostly affects ascii traffic (text, html, etc).
