First: Quadras can run systems up to 8.1 - even if Apple at the time did not tell anyone. If your Q610 has enough RAM, it would definitely make all networking things simpler, faster and more stable to upgrade from 7.6

Some small errors crept in to the other replies to your question. This is how you do it, 8.1:

- Open Apple menu > Control panels > Appletalk. Set Appletalk to run over Ethernet, on both machines
- Decide which machine should be server and which a client. On the server, open Apple menu > Control panels > File sharing, and turn filesharing ON. You don't need to do this on both machines
- Select the folder that you want to share, and select Sharing from the File menu. Click the relevant check boxes

Now open Chooser on the other (client) machine, select AppleShare in the left panel, and your server machine should become visible in the right panel. Open it. That's all!

Maybe it's best to use the G3 as server, to offload the geriatric Quadra. The procedure is the same as for 8.1, except for the way you specify the folder to share. In 9.1, you select the folder, and then Get info from the File-menu. At the top of that window is a local popup menu; select Sharing.
