The 8500 HD finally showed up on the iMac. Does it usually take hours?

The first time you start up File Sharing, it can take quite some time while it builds the volume's index (file protections etc). When it's done, the File Sharing control panel will tell you File Sharing is on (instead of "starting").

There's no need to actually apply ownership and a set of protections to a whole hard drive... Just connect to that computer as the owner - they you have access to all the drives etc.

Copying permissions to enclosed folders turned out to be a huge mistake that I really wish I could undo. It caused every single folder on that volume to update it's modification date.

For some reason which I don't understand, the 8500 volume keeps disappearing from the iMac, (perhaps when there is no action). I then fumble around trying to make it reappear. Finally, it reappears on the iMac for me to sign in again. Not only do I not know what caused it to disappear but I don't know what finally causes it to reappear.

File Sharing sure slows down responses on the 8500 though.
