You say 'ordinary word processing' but what kind? Letters, routine correspondence? Term Papers? Legal research? Fiction? Scientific papers? Do you change fonts often, rarely, do you use Styles a lot, do you need buttons for bold and italics or are your fingers trained for Command-b and Command-i? Same for the New and Save commands?
Letters and reports (usually 25-35 page affairs). Some reports (actually articles) with endnotes. And, I like my fonts to stay put and, almost always, just mess around with font style which I usually access by menu. I've found that not needing to have my fingers leave the keyboard (with the true maven's satisfaction in this) doesn't move me very much; leaving the keyboard, in fact, serves to vary my activity long enough, sometimes, even to give me a chance to *think*. (I'm not so proficient a typist that my typing naturally and unselfconsciously accompanies thought.)
You know, you pretty much just wrote a specification of Nisus Writer; you may want to try out Nisus Express <http://www.nisus.com> before you spend on Word.
