I've got iTunes 4.6 on my 10.2.3 G4, the G4 on the wired side of my NetGear MR314 802.11b router, talking to my 1400/G3/9.1 with iTunes for OS 9 (whatever that version is).

Or rather, not talking.

I can connect to the G4 fine using appletalk to move files around; but entering the URL or IP for the 10.2.3 machine on the 1400 does not result in a connection- just a flash of the connect box then nothing.

I have port 3689 being forwarded on the router to the G4, although it should not matter much as I'm coming in from LAN side; I even put the little Network Beacon app on the G4, configured it, and restarted iTunes, as well as opening port 3689 in the OS X Firewall (even though I have the OS X firewall turned off) since googling told me that sharing outside the subnet needed Network Beacon now. Despite the fact that these are on the same subnet, I thought maybe the wireless-to-wired routing might need the beacon. But no go.

After reading further down in this article:
<http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20030602094254826>

it seems that the iTunes sharing won't work without port 22 AND port 3689 being forwarded to the Mac? Even if you are not requiring a password to share the music. I got all excited by the top part, didn't realize he had better instructions towards the end. Is this a Rendevous thing that I can't get around?

Since I need port 22 to go somewhere else in my LAN, that means I'm done trying to share via iTunes itself. Right?

I could perhaps share the music folder thru regular filesharing, then play THAT from the 1400's iTunes in OS 9, since file sharing works fine. But I'll lose all the library info and radio stations etc that are configured in on the G4.

I think this is a correct summary, but am open to alternatives.
